UN Warns Of Full-Scale Civil War In Sudan

Conflict-torn Following an airstrike on a residential neighborhood that left almost two dozen civilians dead, the United Nations issued a warning Sunday that Sudan is on the verge of a full-scale civil war that may destabilize the entire region.

In what it described as an airstrike Saturday on Omdurman, the sister city of Khartoum, in the district of Dar al-Salam, which is Arabic for “House of Peace,” the health ministry listed 22 civilian fatalities and a sizable number of civilian injuries.

The air strike is the most recent event to spark outrage after nearly three months of conflict between Sudan’s warring generals.

There have been about 3,000 fatalities in the fighting, and survivors have told of a surge of sexual assaults as well as ethnically targeted killings from witnesses.

Widespread theft has taken place, and the UN issued a warning about suspected crimes against humanity in Darfur’s western region.

After the airstrike, victims that appeared to have been dismembered were partially covered on the ground, according to a video shared on Facebook by the health ministry.

Conflict-torn Following an airstrike on a residential neighborhood that left almost two dozen civilians dead, the United Nations issued a warning Sunday that Sudan is on the verge of a full-scale civil war that may destabilize the entire region.

Fighting against the regular army, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) claimed that 31 people were killed in the airstrikes.

The armed forces released a statement on Sunday emphasizing that the air force did not deal with any hostile targets in Omdurman yesterday, despite residents contacted by AFP confirming an air attack.

More airstrikes were reportedly carried out on Sunday near the presidential palaces in Khartoum and Omdurman, as well as machine gun battles and artillery fire in the southern part of the city, according to witnesses.

According to his deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres denounced the air strike in Omdurman, which apparently resulted in at least 22 fatalities and several injuries.

According to Haq, Guterres continues to be extremely concerned that the continuous conflict between the armed forces has brought Sudan dangerously close to a full-scale civil war, which might destabilize the entire region.
