Montana Offers Property and Income Tax Rebates: Discover Your Eligibility and Claim Potential Benefits

Starting August 15, 2023, property owners can apply for a substantial rebate on their 2022 taxes, up to $675 for primary residences in 2023 and 2024.  Remember to reapply in 2024 to stay eligible. 

There are also state income tax reductions available. Single filers in 2022 may receive up to $1,200 from the state. A maximum $2,500 rebate may be available for those who filed for marriage. This is based on an individual’s 2021 tax filing status and the amount stated on line 20 of the 2021 Montana Individual Income Tax Return (Form 2).

How to Be Eligible for the Rebate

To be eligible for the property rebate, individuals must have owned and lived in their Montana home for at least seven months in 2022. Property taxes must have been assessed on their Montana property, and they must have paid those taxes. The claim date for this year is October 1, 2023.

Persons must have submitted a 2021 Montana resident tax return by October 17, 2022, and a 2020 Montana resident or part-year resident tax return by October 17, 2022, to be eligible for this rebate. Line 20 on their 2021 Montana tax return must be greater than zero. 

Individuals must not have been claimed as a dependent on the 2021 tax return of another taxpayer. To be eligible for a reimbursement for state income tax rebate, updated 2021 returns must be filed before May 1, 2023.

The Montana Department of Revenue will start paying out rebates to qualified taxpayers in July 2023 using the banking information they submitted on their most recent Montana Form 2. 

To determine rebate eligibility, visit the TransAction Portal (tap.dor.mt.gov) starting in June 2023. Click on “Where’s My Rebate?” on this website.For 2021 taxes, a social security number and zip code are required. The Thompson Falls area Department of Revenue office has this information available
