Around 7 o’clock in the evening, a tornado was confirmed to have touched down close to O’Hare International Airport.

On Wednesday evening, tornado sirens could be heard in different parts of the city, while weather notifications flashed on phone screens.

At the airports of Midway and O’Hare, flights were halted. At about 7:45 pm, Midway resumed regular flight operations, however departure times were at least 15 minutes late.

Around 8 o’clock, O’Hare flight operations began with ongoing delays. DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, La Salle, McHenry, and Will counties were under a tornado watch until 10 pm.

While a tornado warning signifies that a tornado has been detected or is anticipated by the weather service, a tornado watch only denotes that a tornado is likely.

According to the weather service, the highest tornado risk zones were between Interstate 80 and north near the Wisconsin/Illinois state line.

It’s possible that the hail and strong winds that are predicted for the area can cause damage to vehicles, structures, fences and trees.
