A growing number of American suburban homeowners are actively pushing their local elected officials to prevent the construction of low-income housing in their communities.
NBC reported on a recent City Hall meeting in the suburbs of Phoenix, Arizona, where local homeowners rallied to stop the development of low-income housing as well as senior living facilities.
These homeowners are also known as “not in my backyard” residents and are more commonly known by the acronym NIMBY.
Nate Pomeroy, one of the most outspoken leaders, is opposed to having low-income people live in his suburban community.
In addition to the racial dog whistles these beliefs display, a class divide is also increasing in a property market that is presently going through a lock-in effect cycle where homeowners are reluctant to sell. Earlier this year, Dave Chappelle came under fire for opposing affordable housing as well.
