Everyone has that moment on Monday morning when they feel like a hot (or cold) cup of freshly brewed coffee is the only thing that will get them through the day.
The hard part is figuring out where to get the best coffee.
In order to answer this question, WalletHub looked at the 100 biggest cities in the U.S. and named them as the “Best Coffee Cities in America.”
Each city was given a score between 0 and 100 based on things like the price of coffee, the number of adults who drink coffee, the number of highly rated coffee places, and other similar things.
With a score of 67.01, Portland, Oregon, just beat out San Francisco, California, for first place. In WalletHub’s 2023 list, San Francisco was named the best coffee city in the country, and these two West Coast towns switched places.
Portland has a lot of highly rated, very cheap coffee places, which was enough to make the jump to No. 1. Also, people there spend $170 a year on coffee, which is the 18th most in the country.
In second place, San Francisco, people spend more than $280 a year on the drink, which is more than any other city.
Also, the highest number of homes in the U.S. that have an espresso or cappuccino maker are in San Francisco (11%).
Here are WalletHub’s picks for the 10 best coffee towns in the country:

How do you make a good coffee?
There are a few more steps than you might think that you need to take to make the perfect cup of coffee at home.
Coffee School says that good coffee is made up of four main parts: the beans, the roast, the grind, and the water quality.
“Single-origin” or “small-batch roasting” is a term often used to describe the best coffee beans. This type of coffee comes from a single place and has not been mixed with other beans. Small-batch roasting means exactly what it sounds like: the beans are roasted one at a time, which makes the taste more complex.
The roast tells you what kind of roast your coffee is. Light, medium, medium-dark, and dark are some of these types. This changes many things about your coffee, such as how acidic, sweet, bitter, or strong it is.
How long it takes to grind your beans also affects the taste of your coffee. The sooner the beans are ground, the better. Almost right away, oxidation and other external factors start to break down roasted coffee beans.
Finally, it is suggested that you use regular filtered water for your coffee because it gets rid of unwanted substances and extra minerals. This will also help your coffee maker last longer because it stops limescale and other mineral layers from building up, which all make your coffee taste bad.
