Passengers on United Airlines Flight UA613 endured a terrifying ordeal when the aircraft was hit by a sudden and severe turbulence, causing injuries to 38 people onboard. The flight, a Boeing 787-8, had just departed from Lagos, Nigeria, on January 24, bound for Washington D.C., when chaos erupted. Just over an hour into the flight, the plane lost altitude, leading the crew to declare an emergency and return to Lagos. The plane landed safely at 3:22 a.m., but it left passengers rattled.
Dozens of Injuries, Chaos in the Cabin
The incident resulted in dozens of injuries and chaos in the cabin. Thirty-three people sustained minor injuries, while two staff members and four passengers were badly harmed. Everything happened so fast. One traveler said, “I was just eating my meal when the plane jolted violently—I hit my head on the ceiling.” “Trays, bags, and everything you could think of were flying around the cabin,” another person stated. They were yelling. It felt like the plane was out of control.”
Emergency crews were waiting at the airport when the flight returned. Those with serious injuries were immediately treated and later taken to a local hospital in Lagos for further care.
What Caused the Chaos?
Although turbulence is frequently held responsible for mid-air disruptions, United Airlines has claimed that a “unexpected aircraft movement,” not turbulence, was the cause of this occurrence.
