Donald Trump-Pardoned January 6 Rioters Shot Dead by Cop in Traffic Stop

An Indiana man recently pardoned by President Donald Trump for his involvement in the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot was shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy during a traffic stop.

Fatal Encounter with Law Enforcement

On Sunday at approximately 4 p.m., a Jasper County Sheriff’s deputy pulled over 42-year-old Matthew Huttle of Hobart, Indiana, according to Indiana State Police. While attempting to arrest Huttle, a struggle ensued between him and the officer. Authorities stated that the altercation resulted in the deputy discharging his firearm and fatally wounding Huttle.

Police reported that Huttle owned a firearm at the time of the stop, though they did not clarify whether he had used or brandished the weapon. Details regarding why the officer was attempting to arrest him remain undisclosed.

Jasper County Sheriff Patrick Williamson called for transparency in the case, stating, “For full transparency, I requested the Indiana State Police to investigate this officer-involved shooting. Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased as any loss of life is traumatic to those that were close to Mr. Huttle.”

Huttle’s Past and Jan. 6 Involvement

Huttle was arrested in November 2022 after being identified on video inside the U.S. Capitol during the January 6 riot. Prosecutors said he entered multiple offices, the Crypt area, and hallways. In November 2023, he pleaded guilty to entering and remaining in a restricted building, a lesser charge than his uncle, Dale Huttle, who was also present that day and was accused of striking police officers with a flagpole. As a result, Matthew Huttle was sentenced to six months in prison and one year of supervised release. He remained unapologetic for his involvement, stating, “I’m not ashamed of being there. It was our duty as patriots. I put myself on the line to defend the country. And I have, I have no regrets. I will not say I’m sorry.”

Other Jan. 6 Defendants Face Legal Troubles

Huttle’s death is not the only instance of a pardoned Jan. 6 defendant facing legal issues. Last week, Daniel Ball of Florida, another individual pardoned by Trump, was arrested on a pending federal gun charge. Authorities in Florida linked the charge to his previous convictions for domestic violence battery by strangulation and resisting law enforcement with violence.

Ball’s attorney, Amy Collins, argued that his case should be dismissed, asserting that it stems directly from his prosecution in connection to the Capitol riot. She stated that he was never released following Trump’s pardon and was immediately held on the Florida warrant.

Ball and Huttle were among more than 1,500 people pardoned by Trump for their participation in the Capitol attack. Trump referred to these individuals as “hostages” and issued a full pardon on the first day of his second term, stating, “This is a big one. We hope they come out tonight.” Investigations into Huttle’s fatal shooting are ongoing, with authorities reviewing the circumstances leading up to the traffic stop and subsequent confrontation.
