NYC Chaos: Declined Card Leads to Taxi Driver Assault and Stolen Cab Crash

A late-night taxi ride in Manhattan took a wild turn when a drunk passenger attacked the driver, stole the cab, and crashed it into a parked car. The chaos started around 10:35 p.m. at East 23rd Street and Lexington Avenue when 25-year-old Mame Gueye from the Bronx tried to pay his fare, but his credit card was declined.

When the 47-year-old driver asked him to leave, Gueye allegedly snapped—shoving the driver out of the cab, choking him, and punching him in the torso before taking off in the stolen vehicle.

Stolen Taxi Crashes in Upper East Side

After speeding away, Gueye crashed the taxi into a parked car near East 79th Street and Madison Avenue. Witnesses say he tried to run from the scene, but police caught up with him after a short chase.

Prior Arrests and Charges

Numerous charges have been brought against Gueye, including assault, grand larceny auto, robbery, and driving under the influence. He was previously arrested for DWI in March 2023, according to police records.

Response of the Taxi and Limousine Commission

The event was deemed “outrageous” by the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission, which also praised the NYPD for their prompt arrest. The driver is also receiving assistance from the commission.
