Families Mourn Loved Ones Found in JetBlue Plane’s Landing Gear

The discovery of two lifeless bodies in the landing gear of a JetBlue plane has left families in mourning and authorities searching for answers. On January 7, 2025, after a JetBlue flight arrived at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) from New York’s JFK Airport, maintenance crews made the grim discovery during a routine inspection.

Identifying the Victims

The Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) confirmed the identities of the victims as Jeik Anilus Lusi and Elvis Borquez Castillo, both from the Dominican Republic. Their devastated mothers, Margarita Luisi Elisma and Ironelis Castillo, helped authorities confirm their sons’ identities through photographs. The news hit them like a tidal wave. “We didn’t know where they were,” said Castillo. “We thought they were trying to find a better future.”

What Happened to Them?

Preliminary investigations indicate that both men died from asphyxiation and hypothermia—common causes when stowaways hide in airplane landing gear due to extreme altitude, low oxygen, and frigid temperatures. Authorities are still investigating how the men managed to bypass airport security and board the aircraft undetected.

A Mother’s Heartbreak

Ironelis Castillo shared the last memory of her son, Elvis, as he left their home on January 4. A neighbor confirmed they drove him to a nearby airport, but she had no idea it would be the last time she’d see him alive. “He wanted more than what life could offer here,” she said tearfully. “I never thought it would end like this.”

Authorities Seek Answers

As the investigation continues, BSO detectives have traveled to the Dominican Republic to work with local officials. The families are now waiting for the return of their loved ones’ remains so they can finally say goodbye. “We deserve answers,” said Margarita Elisma. “Our sons died chasing dreams they believed were out of reach.”
