Multiple Arrests Made Following Tragic Blast

The arrests include two couples taken into custody on Wednesday and another couple arrested last Friday, according to Honolulu Police Department homicide Lt. Deena Thoemmes. Police expect additional arrests as the investigation unfolds. “We are recovering more evidence and identifying more individuals. As a result, additional arrests will be forthcoming,” Thoemmes said during a news conference.

Deadly Chain Reaction and Investigation Challenges

The explosion, which killed three women, one man, and a 3-year-old boy, left approximately 20 others injured. The tragedy was triggered when a lit bundle of mortar-style aerial fireworks tipped over, igniting crates of unlit fireworks and setting off a rapid series of explosions.

The investigation has been complex due to the number of suspects involved and the large volume of evidence, including fireworks that require thorough testing. Lt. Thoemmes explained that police are collaborating with prosecutors to file charges but need time to properly process the case.

All six suspects have been arrested on charges including first-degree reckless endangering, first-degree endangering the welfare of a minor, and multiple fireworks-related offenses. The first two suspects were released pending further investigation.

Ongoing Efforts and Community Impact

The confiscation of 500 pounds of unused fireworks underscores the scale of illegal activity in the area. Authorities are continuing to identify additional individuals involved in the procurement, storage, and use of illegal fireworks. Testing of the confiscated fireworks is ongoing to determine their origins and any links to larger distribution networks.

Local leaders have called for stricter enforcement of fireworks regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Police are urging anyone with information about the incident or illegal fireworks to come forward and assist with the investigation.
