Aurora police are actively searching for 26-year-old Jose Barragan, who is wanted in connection with the tragic New Year’s Day shooting that led to the death of an 82-year-old man, Fidel Macias-Hernandez. A warrant for Barragan’s arrest was issued on January 7, but nearly a month later, authorities have yet to locate him.
What Exactly Happened?
The shooting occurred on January 1, marking a violent start to the new year for the North Anderson Street neighborhood. Police responded to a ShotSpotter alert at 6:52 p.m. and discovered Macias-Hernandez inside his home suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where doctors fought to save him for more than two weeks. Sadly, he passed away from his injuries on January 16.
Suspect Fired Multiple Rounds Into Victim’s Home
According to investigators, Barragan allegedly fired several shots from outside the residence, striking the elderly man inside before fleeing the scene on foot. What should have been a peaceful evening inside his home turned into a deadly attack, leaving neighbors shocked and grieving the loss of a longtime resident.
Authorities worked swiftly to gather evidence, and after an extensive investigation, they identified Barragan as the suspect. He now faces serious charges, including two counts of first-degree murder and multiple felony weapons offenses. Despite their efforts, Aurora police have been unable to track him down, sparking a community-wide manhunt.
Barragan is described as 5-foot-4 and weighing approximately 130 pounds. He has black hair, brown eyes, and distinct tattoos on his chest, fingers, and forearms. Officials believe he may be armed and are urging the public to avoid approaching him if spotted.
Police Urge Public to Come Forward With Tips
Aurora police are turning to the community for help in locating Barragan, stressing that even the smallest piece of information could be crucial. “Someone out there knows where he is,” a spokesperson for the police department said. “We’re asking anyone who may have seen him or knows of his whereabouts to come forward before someone else gets hurt.”
