The situation became so alarming in New York City that authorities ordered the temporary closure of live poultry markets after multiple cases were detected, leading to a rush to sell off chickens and other fowl.
Despite the alarming spread, Governor Kathy Hochul reassured the public that the closures were a precautionary measure and that, for now, there was no immediate threat to public health.
