For many, Ocean Drive is more than just a road. It’s a symbol of Miami Beach’s energy, a place where people stroll, bike, dine outdoors, and soak in the Art Deco charm. Why Is This Happening?
Back in 2020, when COVID-19 changed the world, Miami Beach shut down Ocean Drive to cars. The move gave businesses more space for outdoor dining and created a safer, more walkable area. Later, city officials allowed one-way traffic with a dedicated bike lane.
But here’s the issue—turns out, Miami Beach never had the right permits to keep things this way. A judge recently ruled that the city must restore two-way traffic between 5th and 13th streets. That means saying goodbye to the bike lane and making space for cars once again.
Locals Speak Out: Mixed Feelings All Around
Not everyone is thrilled about this decision. Many cyclists and pedestrians love the open feel of Ocean Drive and don’t want to share it with cars. “It’s so nice to bike here without worrying about traffic,” said Lilly Freeman, a tourist visiting from New Zealand.
On the other hand, some business owners are welcoming the change. Mitch Novic, owner of the Sherbrooke Hotel, has long argued that the car-free setup made it harder for customers to reach businesses. “We need traffic—it helps bring people in,” he said.
What’s Next?
The decision has angered Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner. He referred to it as “outrageous” and said that a single judge shouldn’t decide such a significant case. A court hearing for the city’s retaliation is scheduled for February 26, 2025.
