Heads up, Chicago! A big winter storm is barreling toward us, and itโs bringing several inches of snow that could seriously mess with your midweek plans. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch, and if youโve got somewhere to be Wednesday, you might want to think twice.
When Is the Storm Hitting?
The snow will start falling Wednesday morning, but things will really pick up in the afternoon and evening. This is when the storm will be at its worst, with snowfall rates of up to an inch per hour making it tough for plows to keep up. The storm will ease up by early Thursday morning, but by then, we could be looking at 4 to 7 inches of snowโand some areas might see even more.
This isnโt just a light dusting, folks. This is the kind of snow that sticks around and makes getting around a challenge.
What Does This Mean for Travel?
If youโve ever been stuck in Chicago traffic during a snowstorm, you already know what to expect: long delays, slippery roads, and lots of honking. The Wednesday evening commute is expected to be especially rough. Roads will be covered in snow, visibility will be poor, and accidents are likely.
If you donโt absolutely have to drive, consider staying off the roads. But if you do need to head out, take it slow, give yourself extra time, and keep plenty of distance between you and other cars. Donโt forget to check in with public transit, tooโdelays or changes in service are a possibility.
How to Be Ready
- Stay in the know: Keep checking weather updates and local news for changes.
- Limit travel: Work from home if you can or run your errands before the snow starts.
- Pack an emergency kit: If youโre driving, have blankets, snacks, water, and a flashlight in your car.
- Stay connected: Tell someone where youโre going and when you expect to arrive.
More Snow This Weekend?
Unfortunately, this storm might not be the end of it. Another winter system could bring more snow or freezing rain over the weekend, so donโt pack away your snow gear just yet.
Stay warm, stay safe, and if you can, stay off the roads Wednesday evening. Chicagoโs winter is just getting started.
