Parents are being urged to bundle their kids up in warm layers before heading out, as wind chills are expected to make it feel even colder than the actual temperature.

Parents should prepare their kids for a frigid morning commute, as temperatures will stay below freezing for much of the day. Thick coats, gloves, scarves, and hats are a must!

Dallas ISD: Schools Open, Outdoor Activities Canceled

Like Fort Worth ISD, Dallas ISD has also decided to keep schools open, but they’re canceling all outdoor athletic activities through Thursday, February 20. The district says that while students will still attend school, they don’t want anyone outside for long periods in dangerously cold temperatures.

Indoor events and activities will continue as planned, but parents should keep an eye on school communications for any last-minute changes.

How Cold Is It Going to Get?

  • Up to Thursday at 9:00 AM CST, North and Central Texas are under an Extreme Cold Warning, according to the National Weather Service.
  • It could seem considerably colder than it actually is since wind chills can drop as low as -12°F. On exposed skin, frostbite can develop in as little as 30 minutes.
  • Traveling could be challenging, particularly in the early, due to the possibility of icy roads and walkways.

How can one stay safe? Wear layers, cover all exposed skin, and spend as little time outside as possible.

How to Keep Kids Safe in the Cold

  • Dress them in warm layers! Hats, gloves, thick coats, and scarves are essential.
  • Give yourself extra time in the morning—icy roads could slow down traffic.
  • Check for school updates in case anything changes overnight.
