ERCOT on Alert: Can Texas’ Power Grid Handle the Arctic Cold?

If you stepped outside today and felt like you were suddenly in the middle of an ice storm, you’re not alone. A powerful Arctic cold front has arrived in San Antonio, bringing plunging temperatures, biting winds, and possible power concerns as the city braces for its coldest stretch of the season.

After a stretch of mild weather, the drastic temperature drop has caught many off guard. Here’s what you can expect in the next few days and how to stay safe.

How Cold Will It Get?

This Arctic blast isn’t playing around. Temperatures, which were in the 70s just days ago, have nosedived into the 30s and will continue to drop. By tonight, wind chill values could make it feel like the single digits—an incredibly rare occurrence for this part of Texas.

ERCOT on Alert: Can Texas’ Power Grid Handle the Arctic Cold?

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning, in effect from midnight through Thursday afternoon. If you’re outside for extended periods, frostbite and hypothermia are real risks, especially with the harsh winds in play.

Gusty Winds Make It Feel Even Colder

It’s not just the temperature that’s making things miserable—it’s the howling winds. Wind gusts are expected to hit 40 mph, making it feel even colder than the actual temperature. A Wind Advisory is in place, and these gusts could lead to downed trees, power outages, and dangerous driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles.

If you’re out and about, be cautious on the roads—strong winds and icy conditions can make for a dangerous combination.

Power Concerns: Will ERCOT’s Grid Hold Up?

Every time Texas experiences a major cold front, concerns over the power grid come rushing back. ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) has issued a weather watch, warning that energy demand will skyrocket as Texans crank up the heat.

Right now, grid operators say there’s enough power to meet demand, but residents are encouraged to conserve energy where possible—lowering thermostat settings, unplugging unnecessary electronics, and avoiding major appliance use during peak hours.

How to Stay Safe in This Arctic Blast

With temperatures hovering near freezing, it’s important to take the right precautions:

  • Dress in layers. Cover exposed skin, especially your hands and face.
  • Protect your pipes. Insulate exposed pipes to prevent freezing and bursting.
  • Bring pets inside. This cold is dangerous for them too!
  • Check on elderly neighbors. Make sure they have proper heating and supplies.
  • Stock up on supplies. If roads get icy, it’s best to stay home and avoid travel.

Looking Ahead: When Will It Warm Up?

San Antonio will remain locked in chilly weather through Friday, with daytime highs struggling to get past the mid-40s. The good news? By Sunday, we’ll finally see temperatures climb back into the upper 60s.

Until then, bundle up—this Arctic blast isn’t leaving just yet.
