After a soggy start to the week, the rain has finally moved out, leaving behind cooler and drier conditions for the First Coast. The cold front that brought downpours over the past few days has now pushed offshore, ushering in crisp, refreshing air that will stick around for a while.
If you’ve been waiting for a true taste of Florida’s winter, now’s your chance to break out the sweaters and enjoy the change!
Rain Moves Out, Clouds Linger
Much of the First Coast saw steady showers earlier this week, with some areas getting heavy rainfall at times. Now, as the system moves away, the skies are beginning to clear. While a few clouds may linger, we’re finally getting a break from the wet weather.
The shift in the pattern comes as a strong cold front pushes through, leaving behind drier air and a noticeable drop in temperatures.
Chilly Mornings and Cool Afternoons Ahead
If you’re stepping outside today, you’ll immediately feel the difference. Temperatures will struggle to climb past 59°F (15°C) this afternoon, and tonight, we’re looking at a sharp drop to 33°F (1°C).
This below-average cold spell will stick around through the weekend, with highs staying in the low to mid-60s and overnight lows dipping into the 40s. It’s not quite a freeze for most of the area, but it’s certainly a reminder that winter isn’t over yet!
How to Prepare for the Cold
Now is the moment to take some measures as the chilly air settles in:
- Wearing layers will make the afternoons more comfortable, but the mornings will be cold. Wearing layers will help you adapt to the temperature changes.
- Safeguard your pets and plants: Bring your delicate plants inside or cover them up. Warm shelter is also necessary for outside pets during the next colder evenings.
- Check your heating system – If you haven’t turned on your heat in a while, now’s a good time to test it to make sure it’s working safely.
What’s Next?
The cooler, dry weather will continue through the weekend, with no major rain in the forecast. Expect plenty of sunshine but chilly mornings and mild afternoons. By next week, temperatures may begin to warm back up slightly, but for now, we’re stuck in sweater weather mode!
