A brutal wave of arctic air is set to sweep across northwest Kansas, eastern Colorado, and southwest Nebraska, bringing life-threatening wind chills as low as -16°F. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Goodland has issued a Cold Weather Advisory from 11 p.m. Thursday to 8 a.m. Friday, warning residents to take immediate precautions against extreme cold.
Subzero Wind Chills Pose Severe Health Risks
Residents in affected areas, including Goodland, Colby (KS), McCook (NE), and Burlington (CO), are urged to prepare for dangerously low temperatures. With strong winds intensifying the cold, even brief exposure to the elements could lead to frostbite in as little as 30 minutes.
According to meteorologists, wind chills will plummet well below zero, making this one of the coldest nights of the season. Prolonged exposure might lead to hypothermia, which can be life-threatening if treatment is not given on time, further warned the advisory.
How to maintain caution in the extreme cold?
Residents are being advised to stay indoors unless it is too urgent and abide by the following precautions:
Remain indoors– Try not to step out unless it is an emergency, especially during night hours to prevent prolonged exposure to the cold.
Layered protection: Dress warm with thermal undergarments, insulated coats, gloves, hats, and scarves. These are quite necessary to retain body heat.
Extra caution for pets: Animals suffer the most during winters. Try to give them a proper shelter indoors and keep them warm.
Stop your pipes from freezing: Allow warm air to circulate around the plumbing by letting faucets drip slightly and opening cabinet doors.
Maintain caution while using heating devices: Space heaters should be kept at least three feet away from flammable materials. Also, never leave them unattended.

It is being predicted by the forecasters that the temperatures will increase minimally by Friday afternoon. However, by early next week, another cold weather session might arrive. Citizens are being asked by authorities to monitor weather updates and stay vigilant on weather extremities.
