If your Texas driverโs license is up for renewal, donโt stress. The process is straightforward, but there are a few things you should know to avoid any hiccups. Hereโs a simple breakdown of how to renew, what you need, and some important updates to keep in mind.
How Can You Renew Your License?
1. Online or By Phone (The Easiest Option)
Most Texans can renew their license without ever stepping into a DPS office. You can do it online or by calling 1-866-DL-RENEW (1-866-357-3639).
Whoโs Eligible?
- You are a U.S. citizen with a Social Security number on file.
- Your current license is still valid or hasnโt been expired for more than two years.
- Youโre between 18 and 79 years old.
- Your vision and overall health havenโt changed since your last renewal.
- Youโve renewed in person at least once before.
What Youโll Need:
- Your current driverโs license.
- The last four digits of your Social Security number.
- A valid credit/debit card for payment.
What Happens Next?
Once you complete the process, youโll get a temporary license valid for 60 days, and your new permanent license will arrive in the mail within that time.
2. By Mail (Only If Youโre Invited)
If youโre eligible to renew by mail, the Texas DPS will send you a renewal notice. Follow the instructions carefully, include the necessary documents and fees, and send everything to the address listed.
3. In Person (When You Have to Go)
Some people must renew in person. This includes:
- Drivers under 18 or over 79.
- Non-U.S. citizens.
- Anyone whose license has been expired for more than two years.
What to Bring to the DPS Office:
- A completed renewal application (you can find this on the Texas DPS website).
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence (passport, birth certificate, etc.).
- Proof of Texas residency (utility bill, lease agreement, or similar).
- Your Social Security number.
- Payment for the renewal fee (see below).
At the DPS office, youโll need to:
- Pass a vision test.
- Provide thumbprints.
- Get a new photo taken.
Important Updates
REAL ID Deadline Coming in 2025
Starting May 7, 2025, youโll need a REAL ID-compliant license (marked with a star in the top right corner) to board domestic flights or enter federal buildings. If your license doesnโt have this star, you might want to upgrade during renewal.
New Document Rules
If youโre renewing in person, make sure you have all the required documents (like your birth certificate, Social Security card, or marriage license). The DPS has tightened its rules, and missing paperwork could mean an extra trip.
