Jack Vettriano, Self-Taught Artist Who Took the Art World by Storm, Passes Away

Scottish artist Jack Vettriano, best known for his iconic painting The Singing Butler, has passed away at the age of 73. He was found in his apartment in Nice, France, on March 1, 2025. Authorities have stated that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

From Miner to Master Painter

Vettrianoโ€™s journey into the art world was anything but traditional. Born Jack Hoggan in Methil, Fife, in 1951, he left school at 16 to become a mining engineer. His passion for painting ignited when he received a set of watercolors for his 21st birthday. From that moment on, he taught himself to paint, adopting the name Vettriano as his career took off.

A Public Favorite, Despite the Critics

Despite often being dismissed by art critics, Vettrianoโ€™s romantic and cinematic style won over the public. His works, often featuring mysterious figures in vintage settings, captured an old-school glamour reminiscent of film noir. His most famous painting, The Singing Butlerโ€”depicting a couple dancing on a windswept beach as their servants hold umbrellasโ€”became one of the best-selling images in the UK. It later sold at auction for ยฃ744,800 in 2004.

Scotland Pays Tribute to a National Treasure

Scotlandโ€™s First Minister John Swinney led tributes, calling Vettriano โ€œa unique and cherished talentโ€ who brought joy to so many. Fans worldwide are mourning his passing, remembering him not just for his paintings but for his defiant spirit and refusal to conform to the art worldโ€™s expectations.
