Demetric Deshawn Scott, 52, is accused of sending a fake letter threatening to assassinate Donald Trump. The letter, written in English and signed with the name of Ramón Morales Reyes, was sent to U.S. officials. Morales Reyes, a 54-year-old undocumented immigrant from Mexico, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on May 22 after dropping his child off at school.
However, investigators soon discovered that Morales Reyes could neither read nor write in English, casting doubt on his involvement. Handwriting analysis and jailhouse recordings revealed that Scott, who was awaiting trial for robbing and assaulting Morales Reyes in 2023, orchestrated the scheme to prevent Morales Reyes from testifying.
Evidence Points to Scott
Authorities found that Scott had discussed the plan in jailhouse calls, expressing his intent to have Morales Reyes deported to derail the trial. He allegedly admitted to writing the letters, which included threats to “blow up the country like 9/11.”
Scott now faces multiple charges, including felony witness intimidation, identity theft, and bail jumping. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 10.
Morales Reyes Remains in Custody
Despite being cleared of the threat, Morales Reyes remains in ICE custody due to his undocumented status and previous immigration violations. He has applied for a U visa, designated for undocumented victims of serious crimes who assist law enforcement. His attorneys are seeking his release, emphasizing his role as a victim and his family ties in the U.S.
Broader Implications
The case has sparked criticism of the Department of Homeland Security’s handling of the situation. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem initially praised the arrest, but the narrative quickly unraveled as evidence of the frame-up emerged
Advocacy groups and attorneys are calling for Morales Reyes’ release and a full investigation into the matter, highlighting concerns about the potential misuse of the legal system to manipulate immigration enforcement and obstruct justice.
