New York on Fire Watch! Burn Ban Issued Amid High Wildfire Risk!

New York, NY โ€“ March 13, 2025 โ€“ If you were planning a backyard bonfire this weekend, think again. A burn ban has been issued for New York City, Long Island, and much of the Hudson Valley due to heightened wildfire risks. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the emergency measure following a series of brush fires in Long Islandโ€™s Pine Barrens, which forced evacuations and road closures earlier this week.

Why the Burn Ban?

Dry conditions, gusty winds, and low humidity are the perfect recipe for dangerous wildfires. While we typically think of fire hazards being a West Coast problem, New York is no stranger to fast-moving brush fires. With minimal rainfall recently, vegetation is dry and highly flammable. The warm temperatures over the past few days, coupled with brisk winds, have only increased the risk.

What Does the Ban Mean for You?

The burn ban prohibits open fires for burning leaves, brush, or debris. Even if you have a large backyard, donโ€™t be tempted to clear out your winter yard waste with fireโ€”itโ€™s illegal right now. Campfires are also restricted unless contained in a designated fire pit. However, backyard fire pits and small cooking fires (such as barbecues) are still allowed, provided theyโ€™re properly managed.

NY wildfire guidance: No outdoor flames

Authorities are urging New Yorkers to follow the restrictions strictly. It takes only one stray ember to ignite a serious blaze. Firefighters have already responded to multiple small wildfires in the region, and with conditions expected to stay dry, the risk remains high.

Current Weather Conditions

Today, New York City is seeing mostly cloudy skies with cooler temperatures, reaching a high of 45ยฐF (7ยฐC) and a low of 41ยฐF (5ยฐC). Winds are blowing at 10-15 mph, adding to the wildfire risk by spreading embers more easily.

Looking ahead, Friday (March 14) will bring some sunshine and slightly warmer temperatures, with a high of 51ยฐF (10ยฐC). Saturday (March 15) is expected to stay mostly cloudy, hovering around 52ยฐF (11ยฐC) during the day and dropping to 49ยฐF (10ยฐC) at night. By Sunday (March 16), weโ€™ll see gusty winds return, with cloudy skies and some scattered showers in the afternoon. The temperature will rise to 61ยฐF (16ยฐC), bringing some much-needed moisture, though it wonโ€™t be enough to eliminate fire risks immediately.

What You Can Do to Stay Safe

New Yorkers are urged to stay vigilant and avoid any activities that could accidentally spark a fire. Hereโ€™s how you can help:

  • Avoid outdoor burning entirely. If you have leaves or yard debris, consider composting or waiting until the ban is lifted.
  • Be extra cautious with outdoor grills. Always have a water source nearby, and never leave them unattended.
  • Report any signs of fire immediately. If you see smoke or flames, call 911 right away.

Final Thoughts

This burn ban isnโ€™t just a precautionโ€”itโ€™s a necessity. With dry conditions persisting, even a small flame could turn into a dangerous situation. Letโ€™s all do our part to keep our communities safe. The ban remains in effect through March 16, but officials will reassess based on conditions.

Stay safe and stay informed, New York!
