A new initiative called Breathe will soon begin accepting applications as part of the guaranteed income program in Los Angeles County. Former foster children living in Los Angeles County will be eligible for $1,000 monthly payments. This program’s application period opened on June 20.
Breathe seeks to provide residents with financial security. The county intends to designate 200 individuals who will receive monthly payments of $1,000 for two years.
The application period will begin on June 20 and end on July 3 at 11:59 p.m. (local time). The funds will be distributed to foster youth ages 21 to 23 who were in the custody of the LA County DCFS (Department of Children and Families).
Are You Qualified for $1000 Monthly Benefit?
In order to be eligible for the assured monthly payments from Los Angeles County, applicants must be at least 21 years old and will not turn 24 before September 1, 2023. In addition, they must have been in the care system on or after their 18th birthday, a milestone commonly referred to as “aging out.”
In addition, applicants must have a household income that is equal to or less than 100 percent of the area’s median income for single-person households, or 120 percent or less for households with two or more people.
Applicants must have also been negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Existing participants in other guaranteed income programs will not be eligible for the Breathe program.
It is important to note that having a bank account is not a requirement to participate in the program. Debit cards will be used to disburse funds to successful registrants. Using the information provided in their applications, direct contact will be made with the selected candidates.
The Breathe guaranteed income program in Los Angeles County is not a new initiative; it was introduced as a demonstration project last year, with one thousand individuals receiving $1,000 per month for three years.
According to the Washington Examiner, 200 more participants will be introduced to the program this year.
