According to allegations in the American media, Twitter has threatened neighboring social networking company Meta with legal action over its competing text app, Threads.
Twitter legal representative Alex Spiro wrote to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday, with a copy obtained by US news outlet Semafor. In the letter, Spiro accused Meta of stealing Twitter’s trade secrets and intellectual property by hiring Twitter employees to develop a “copycat” text app.
On Thursday, Associated Press said it had received a feces emoji in response to a tweet asking for comment. The attitude of the corporation under the direction of billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk is reflected in the regular automated answer given to journalists.

Twitter was purchased by Musk in 2022 for $44 billion (€40.4 billion), but he has made no public comments on the matter. Also, Twitter’s CEO Linda Yaccarino hasn’t said much about it beyond tweeting, “We’re often imitated — but the Twitter community can never be duplicated.”
Meta’s Instagram staff developed Threads, which was released on Wednesday night and quickly gained tens of millions of users.
Since Musk acquired control of Twitter, the firm has struggled to keep its users. His contradictory words and public antics have prompted some to look elsewhere for leadership.
As users are slow to flock to ex-President Trump’s Truth Social, Zuckerberg and Meta may have found a window of opportunity, yet the business once known as Facebook has a history of letting ventures wither.
Due to the more stringent data security requirements in the EU, Threads was not released in any of the EU’s 100 member states.
