UN human rights experts demanded the release of two Saudi Arabian women on Friday after they tweeted criticism of the government’s practices and claimed they had been arbitrarily arrested and denied fundamental rights.
Following their arrests in separate incidents in 2021, Salma al-Shehab received a sentence of 34 years in prison and Nourah bint Saeed al-Qahtani received a sentence of 45 years last summer.
They were found guilty by a special court that was initially created to prosecute terror suspects but that has since expanded its jurisdiction due to a harsh crackdown on dissent.
