Shannon Depararra Atkins, a 46-year-old resident of West Palm Beach, Florida, was arrested on Friday night after allegedly making violent threats against President Donald Trump on social media. The arrest followed a tip to the FBI’s threat center. Atkins was apprehended during a traffic stop, where officers also discovered cocaine in his possession. He is currently held without bond at the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Main Detention Center.
Nature of the Threats
Authorities have not disclosed the specific content of Atkins’ online threats. However, such actions are taken seriously, especially given the proximity of Atkins’ residence to President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach. There is no indication that Atkins attempted to approach the resort.
Legal Charges
Atkins faces charges of making written or electronic threats to kill, cause bodily injury, conduct a mass shooting, or commit an act of terrorism. Additionally, he has been charged with drug possession due to the cocaine found during his arrest. The West Palm Beach Police Department has stated that the U.S. Secret Service will determine whether federal charges will be pursued.
Law Enforcement’s Stance
West Palm Beach Police Chief Tony Araujo emphasized the gravity of such threats, stating, “Folks, this is not a joke. Nothing of that sort is a joke. In today’s climate, you really can’t say things like this.” He highlighted the importance of taking these threats seriously to ensure public safety.
Context of Recent Security Concerns
This arrest comes in the wake of heightened security concerns, following two assassination attempts on President Trump in 2024. These incidents have led to increased vigilance by law enforcement agencies to protect public figures and address potential threats promptly.
