Autumn was found unresponsive at the bottom of the staircase in her family’s home on January 13. Her husband, Carlos Mercado, 47, is now at the center of a police investigation following his unusual response to discovering her body.
Discovery of the Body
Carlos Mercado told investigators that he found his wife that morning at the bottom of the stairs. Instead of calling 911 or checking for signs of life, he reportedly assumed she was asleep and covered her with a blanket. According to the police report, Carlos then left the home to buy beer, leaving their three children alone in the house with their unresponsive mother.
Autumn was later pronounced dead when authorities arrived at the scene. Police documents indicate that Carlos did not immediately notify anyone about her death, prompting law enforcement to take him into custody.
