A high-speed Brightline train collided with a Delray Beach Fire Rescue ladder truck at the intersection of East Atlantic Avenue and Railroad Avenue, leaving 15 people injured. The fire truck, responding to an emergency call, crossed the tracks after a freight train passed but was struck moments later by the Brightline train. Those injured included three firefighters and twelve train passengers.
Mayor’s Response
A thorough internal investigation into the crash’s circumstances has been started by Mayor Tom Carney. “We need to ensure public trust in our emergency services and their commitment to safety,” Carney said. The investigation will ascertain whether appropriate safety procedures were observed and pinpoint any possible errors in the firefighters’ reaction.
Focus on Firefighter’s Driving History
Because of his prior driving history, Engineer David Wyatt, the fire truck driver, is currently being investigated. Wyatt received a careless driving penalty and a temporary license suspension in 2023 after he lost control of his automobile and struck a tree in a different incident. As part of the ongoing inquiry, officials are looking over this history.
Multiple Investigations Underway
Brightline, the National Transportation Safety Board, and the Delray Beach Police Department are all conducting their own investigations in addition to the city’s internal assessment. The fire truck reportedly entered the lines in spite of active warning signals, according to preliminary reports. Authorities are investigating the fire truck crew’s decision-making process and the operation of the crossing safety equipment.
Mayor’s Assurance to Residents
Mayor Carney has assured the community that the findings will guide improvements in safety protocols. “The safety of our residents and first responders is paramount,” he emphasized, vowing to prevent similar incidents in the future.
