The man accused of brutally murdering Maryland mother Rachel Morin is fighting to have his trial moved to a different location. Victor Antonio Martinez-Hernandez, a 23-year-old illegal immigrant from El Salvador, is expected to argue in court that he won’t get a fair trial in Harford County due to intense media coverage.
His lawyers claim the public has already made up its mind, making it impossible to find an impartial jury. A hearing on the request is set for Friday.
What Happened to Rachel Morin?
In August 2023, 37-year-old Rachel Morin disappeared while jogging on the Ma & Pa Trail in Bel Air, Maryland. The next day, her body was found in a drainage pipe near the trail. Investigators say she was sexually assaulted and murdered in a violent attack.
Martinez-Hernandez was arrested almost a year later in Tulsa, Oklahoma, after DNA linked him to the crime. He was extradited to Maryland, where he faces charges of first-degree murder and first-degree rape. If convicted, he could spend the rest of his life in prison.
Why Does the Defense Want a New Venue?
Martinez-Hernandez’s attorneys argue that nonstop media coverage has already painted him as guilty, making it impossible to seat an unbiased jury. They claim reports on his immigration status and the gruesome details of the case have created a hostile environment.
The court will now have to decide whether the trial should be moved to a different Maryland county.
Rachel’s Family Seeks Justice
Rachel’s family remains determined to see the case through. Their attorney, Randolph Rice, said they are “fully prepared for this next step” and committed to making sure the trial is fair.
What’s Next?
The judge will consider the request for a venue change during Friday’s hearing. Until then, Martinez-Hernandez remains in custody at Harford County Jail, awaiting trial.
