Winn-Dixie Is Back! Southeastern Grocers Buys Back 170 Stores from ALDI

In a surprising turn of events, Southeastern Grocers (SEG) is taking back control of around 170 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket locations from ALDI, less than a year after selling them. The move, finalized on February 7, 2025, brings these stores back under their original management in states including Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

How Did This Happen?

Last year, ALDI acquired Southeastern Grocers, which included approximately 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores. At the time, ALDI planned to convert around 220 of those locations into its discount grocery format while keeping the rest operating as they were. However, a group of private investors—including SEG CEO Anthony Hucker and C&S Wholesale Grocers—stepped in to reclaim a portion of the stores.

What This Means for Shoppers

For customers who were worried about their neighbourhood Winn-Dixie or Harveys disappearing, this is welcome news. The 170 reacquired locations will continue to operate under their familiar branding, meaning customers can expect the same selection, service, and shopping experience they’ve known for years.

ALDI, on the other hand, will proceed with its plan to convert about 220 other Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores into its signature no-frills, discount grocery model, a process expected to be completed by 2027.

Leadership Speaks Out

Anthony Hucker, now the Chairman, CEO, and President of Southeastern Grocers, expressed his excitement about the deal, emphasizing his commitment to keeping the brand alive. “We are profoundly grateful and deeply honoured to continue serving the communities we cherish,” he said.

What’s Next for Employees?

The good news for store employees is that they will remain in their positions under the new leadership. The company has reassured staff that jobs will be preserved as the transition takes place, and customers can expect business as usual at these locations.

Final Thoughts

This deal marks a major shift in the grocery landscape of the Southeastern U.S. While ALDI will still expand its footprint with converted locations, Winn-Dixie and Harveys will maintain a strong presence under Southeastern Grocers’ renewed leadership. For shoppers who prefer the traditional supermarket experience over ALDI’s limited-selection model, this buyback is a big win.
