This past weekend, winter showed no mercy as a massive storm blanketed parts of the northern U.S. with heavy snow and dangerous freezing rain. Cities across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and New York woke up to icy roads, slick sidewalks, and flights grounded by the hundreds.
Highways turned into skating rinks, forcing drivers to either crawl or stay home altogether. Airports in Chicago, Detroit, and Boston saw widespread cancellations, stranding frustrated travelers and leaving many wondering when things will return to normal. Over 25 million people in 19 states felt the storm’s icy grip, but unfortunately, this is only the beginning.
Three More Winter Storms Are on the Way
Just when you thought it was safe to head outside, meteorologists are warning that three more storm systems are lining up to hit the Northern Plains, Midwest, and Northeast throughout the week.
The FOX Forecast Center predicts another round of heavy snow—potentially up to 12 inches in some areas—along with freezing rain that could coat roads and power lines with a dangerous layer of ice. If you live in these regions, expect more slippery commutes, potential power outages, and another round of weather-related headaches.
Power Outages and Icy Roads Could Turn Dangerous
Some areas may be left without power if tree limbs and power wires are brought down by the combination of heavy snow and freezing rain. With black ice hiding behind the snow and near-blizzard conditions in some areas, road conditions will be just as dangerous. Everyone is being advised by local authorities to stay indoors, stock up on supplies, and avoid needless travel. Given that power outages in some places can persist for hours or even days, emergency kits containing food, drink, flashlights, and warm clothes are strongly advised. And if you do have to travel, be prepared for delays and dangerous conditions.
What You Can Do Now
These storms are not to be ignored, so pay attention to local forecasts and heed warnings. remain at home, remain warm, and wait for the worst of the storm to pass if you don’t have to travel anywhere. It’s wise to be prepared for whatever Mother Nature has in store because there will be more snow and ice in the near future.
