Sacramento’s First Big Chill of the Year: Freeze Warning in Effect!

If you’ve noticed the mornings feeling extra crisp lately, get ready—it’s about to get even colder. A Freeze Warning is in effect until 7:00 AM Tuesday, as a strong cold front pushes through the region, bringing some of the lowest temperatures we’ve seen this season.

What’s Happening?

Right now, temperatures in Sacramento are hovering around 50°F (10°C), but they’re about to take a nosedive. By late tonight, the city will be flirting with freezing temperatures, with lows expected to hit the mid-30s°F (1-2°C). Some areas could even drop below freezing overnight.

Sacramento’s First Big Chill of the Year: Freeze Warning in Effect!

This sudden cold snap is part of a larger weather system sweeping across California, bringing chilly nights and frosty mornings through at least Tuesday.

How Cold Will It Get?

  • Sunday night: By midnight, the temperature should drop into the upper 30s°F (3–4°C).
  • Monday morning: The night will be at its coldest shortly before sunrise, with temperatures in some places dropping to 32°F (0°C) or below.
  • Monday evening into Tuesday: The temperature once again drops into the mid-30s°F (1-2°C). By Tuesday afternoon, daytime temperatures will rise back into the 60s°F (18°C), but nights will remain cold enough to cause frost and possibly ice patches.

How This Affects You

  • Plants Could Freeze – Cover sensitive plants or bring potted ones inside to keep them from getting frostbitten.
  • Pets Need Warm Shelter – If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them! Make sure pets have a warm, dry place to stay overnight.
  • Pipes Might Freeze – Outdoor pipes and hoses are at risk. Let faucets drip slightly overnight to prevent freezing and bursting.
  • Morning Frost Possible – Windshields and sidewalks may be icy in the early hours. Give yourself extra time before heading out.

Final Thoughts

Although it’s hardly record-breaking cold, if you’re not prepared, it can cause issues. Thus, obtain a spare blanket, see how your neighbors are doing, and remember to bring in the pets and plants. Although this cold spell won’t last forever, it’s staying long enough to have an effect!
