Canada vs. Musk: Petition Seeks to Revoke Billionaire’s Citizenship Over Political Ties

A fast-growing petition is urging the Canadian government to revoke Elon Musk’s citizenship, citing his close ties to former U.S. President Donald Trump and actions that some claim are against Canada’s national interests. More than 200,000 people have signed the petition, demanding that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s administration take action.

The petition, which was launched by British Columbia author Qualia Reed, is sponsored by Member of Parliament Charlie Angus. It argues that Musk’s influence in U.S. politics and alleged support for policies harmful to Canada should be grounds for stripping his citizenship.

Why Are Canadians Targeting Musk?

Elon Musk, who was born in South Africa, obtained Canadian citizenship through his mother, Maye Musk, who hails from Regina, Saskatchewan. While Musk has had longstanding ties to Canada, his recent political stances and growing influence in the Trump administration have sparked backlash.

Many Canadians are concerned about Musk’s alignment with Trump, particularly after the former president proposed tariffs on Canadian goods and even suggested that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state. Musk’s role as an adviser in Trump’s administration has further fueled fears that he could help shape policies that undermine Canada’s economy and sovereignty.

Could Canada Revoke Musk’s Citizenship?

Under Canadian law, a person’s citizenship can be revoked in cases of fraud, misrepresentation, or actions deemed harmful to national interests. If the government were to move forward with revoking Musk’s citizenship, he would be barred from reapplying for at least 10 years.

The petition will remain open for additional signatures until June 20, 2025, after which it will be formally presented to the House of Commons. At that point, the Canadian government will be required to issue an official response.

With the petition gaining traction, the issue is likely to spark further debate in Parliament. While some Canadians support Musk’s entrepreneurial success and technological innovations, others believe his political alliances pose a risk.

So far, Musk has not publicly commented on the petition, and the Canadian government has yet to indicate whether it will take action. However, as the number of signatures grows, the pressure on officials to address the issue is increasing.

The coming weeks will determine whether this movement remains a symbolic protest or gains enough traction to challenge Musk’s status as a Canadian citizen.
