Greg Mathis Jr., son of television personality Judge Greg Mathis, is opening up about his parents’ brief but highly publicized separation and their decision to stay together. Speaking at the NAACP Image Awards, Greg Jr. described the situation as a “media whirlwind”, saying he had never experienced anything like it before.
A Family in the Spotlight
In July 2024, Linda Reese Mathis filed for divorce after nearly four decades of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple, who tied the knot in June 1985, had separated by mid-July, leaving fans shocked. However, just a few months later, in November 2024, they reconciled, bringing relief to their family and friends.
“It was a lot to go through, but Iโm just so happy they worked it out,” Greg Jr. shared in an interview.
Personal Milestones Amid Family Drama
Despite the turbulence at home, Greg Jr. had a major life event of his ownโhe married his longtime partner, Elliott Cooper, in October 2024. The couple, who had been together for over a decade, had publicly shared their journey on the reality series “Mathis Family Matters” in 2022.
Now, Greg Jr. says they are looking ahead to the next chapter, including starting a family through either adoption or surrogacy. However, he acknowledges the financial challenges involved in those options.

Professionally, Greg Jr. is also making waves. He is set to star in the upcoming BET+ film Fighting to Be Me: The Dwen Curry Story, premiering on February 27, 2025. The film tells the story of Dwen Curry, a transgender woman, and highlights the struggles of acceptance and identity.
Greg Jr. expressed how important this project is to him, particularly in todayโs social climate, saying that itโs a story that deserves to be told.
