A breakthrough in a decades-old sexual assault case has resulted in the arrest of a man in West Chicago, Illinois.
Alberto Gomez, 51, of Florence, Arizona, was taken into custody after DNA evidence linked him to a sexual assault that occurred in 2001.
The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s office has charged Gomez with multiple counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, criminal sexual assault, criminal sexual abuse, and aggravated criminal sexual abuse.
In 2001, a woman in West Chicago was sexually assaulted in her apartment.
Last year, the West Chicago Police Department received a DNA hit on a sexual assault sample collected from the crime scene.
The DNA recovered from the victim was found to be consistent with Gomez’s DNA, which was obtained when he was detained for illegally re-entering the United States.
The Alleged Assault: On November 25, 2001, the victim woke up to find a man, later identified as Gomez, standing in her bedroom.
Gomez allegedly pushed her down on the bed, covered her mouth, and proceeded to sexually assault her.
After the assault, Gomez fled the apartment, prompting the victim to contact the police. At the time of the incident, Gomez was reported to have lived in the West Chicago-Warrenville area.

Attorney Commends Illinois Police Efforts in Pursuing Justice
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin commended the West Chicago Police Department for their efforts in pursuing the case and ensuring that justice is served.
Berlin emphasized that the identification and arrest of Gomez after more than two decades sends a strong message that the county is committed to never giving up on a case or a victim.
Gomez has been in federal custody since November when he was detained for illegally re-entering the United States.
He was recently transferred to the DuPage County Jail, where his bond has been set at $5 million. The arrest of Alberto Gomez in connection with a sexual assault that occurred over two decades ago highlights the enduring commitment to seek justice for victims.
The DNA match, combined with the diligent efforts of law enforcement, has led to the charges against Gomez.
As the case progresses, the legal system aims to hold him accountable for the alleged sexual assault of a defenseless woman.
