Later this week, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will visit Beijing in an effort to foster better economic and diplomatic ties with China.
Yellen’s trip to meet with senior officials is scheduled to take place between Thursday and Sunday, according to the Treasury Department.
According to the department’s press release, while in Beijing, Secretary Yellen will speak with PRC officials about the significance of managing our relationship responsibly, being open about areas of concern, and cooperating to address global challenges as the two largest economies in the world.
Yellen will speak about topics from her April speech in China, in which she highlighted the three guiding principles for the US economy’s engagement with the PRC.
First and foremost, the announcement stated, we work to safeguard our national security interests as well as those of our partners and to uphold human rights through focused efforts that are not meant to advance our economic objectives.
Second, we aim for a sound economic partnership with China that promotes both growth and innovation for the benefit of both parties and increases business and employment opportunities for Americans.

Joe Biden Administration’s Efforts To Strengthen Ties With China
Finally, we also hope to work together on pressing global issues like debt distress and climate change.
According to Axios, the trip of the Treasury Secretary does not involve a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
After a Chinese surveillance balloon was shot down over the Atlantic Ocean in February, the voyage that had been scheduled for earlier this year had to be postponed.
Since then, the Joe Biden administration has worked to strengthen ties with the Chinese leadership.
The final representative of the Joe Biden administration to have direct conversations with Chinese officials during a diplomatic visit last month was Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
Soon after, President Joe Biden described Xi as a dictator, escalating the hostilities between the US and China.
