The Florida Board of Education’s recent approval of academic standards for African American social studies classes in K-12 schools has sparked controversy and criticism from various organizations.
As part of an ongoing crusade against public education, the state’s Republican leaders have introduced these standards, raising concerns about the accuracy and inclusivity of the curriculum.
The decision comes amidst a wider debate on how to approach the teaching of African American history and the contributions of Black individuals to society.
The approved standards have drawn significant attention for their problematic language and omissions.
The inclusion of a statement implying that “slaves developed skills” for their own benefit has been particularly contentious.
Additionally, the standards address violence perpetrated against and by African Americans, but the level of detail and nuance in covering their contributions and challenges has been questioned.
Earlier this year, the board banned the teaching of Advanced Placement African American Studies in high schools, citing a lack of educational value and an alleged contradiction with state law.

Unlike the newly approved standards, the AP studies course offered a comprehensive examination of African American history, incorporating perspectives from scholars like Kimberlé Crenshaw, bell hooks, Angela Davis, and introducing topics such as Black feminist thought and intersectionality.
Eleven organizations, including the NAACP and the Florida Education Association, have expressed their dissatisfaction with the decision.
They argue that students should have access to an unvarnished history, one that acknowledges the contributions and complexities of all who shaped the state and country’s past.
Concerns have been raised about how the revised standards might present a skewed version of history, disadvantaging Florida students and hindering their understanding of the nation’s collective journey.
Governor Ron DeSantis, who has declared his candidacy for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, has faced criticism for pursuing a political agenda that could polarize communities and hinder the education of Florida’s youth.
Critics argue that withholding a comprehensive and honest picture of American history could lead to a distorted understanding of the nation’s past and its ongoing struggles.
