While some metro Atlanta districts have already started the new school year, most students are heading back to class next week — and teachers are using every last moment to get ready.
Across the region, thousands of educators are spending their final summer days setting up classrooms, organizing supplies, and preparing to welcome new students.
One Teacher’s Final Preparations
At Centennial Academy, Dr. Jennifer Rich was spotted putting the finishing touches on her second-grade classroom this weekend.
“So this is our last weekend, and we are still prepping,” Rich said. “We’re excited to meet all the new faces. We’re putting things together, we’re getting things ready.”
From colorful bulletin boards to carefully stocked bookshelves, every detail in her room is intentional. For Rich, the physical environment sets the tone for everything that follows.
“My theme is somewhat smiling and happy because you want them to know how to come in with joy,” she said.
A 21-Year Veteran Who Found Her Place
Rich has been teaching for over two decades and comes from a family of educators. She says second grade is her sweet spot — students are independent enough to take initiative, but still hungry to learn and ask questions.
For her, teaching goes far beyond a job.
“It’s a heart ministry, so I feel like it’s a purpose life for myself,” she said.
Her goal this year is simple — build a classroom that develops character, builds confidence, and creates a strong sense of community.
A Message for Nervous Students
With greeting letters placed on every desk and lesson plans ready on the whiteboard, Rich has one message for students feeling anxious about the first day:
