ATLANTA — One of Georgia’s largest healthcare systems is cutting hundreds of jobs, and the company is staying quiet on several key details employees and the public want answered.
Wellstar Health System confirmed it is eliminating 761 positions, roughly 2% of its workforce of more than 35,000 employees. The Atlanta-based nonprofit health group said the cuts come after an internal review of how the organization operates, with the reductions concentrated in corporate functions, shared services, and select administrative roles within Wellstar Medical Group.
The company was clear on one point: no frontline caregivers are losing their jobs. Positions directly tied to patient care were not part of the layoffs, according to the health system.
What remains unclear
Wellstar has not said when the layoffs will officially take effect, leaving affected workers in limbo. The company also has not disclosed whether employees losing their jobs will receive severance pay or assistance finding new employment.
It is also unknown which departments will see the deepest cuts, as the health system has not broken down the reductions by division. Wellstar said the decisions were guided by a comparison to “industry benchmarks,” but did not specify what those standards were or how they were measured.
Company’s response
In a statement, Wellstar said the move reflects its responsibility as a nonprofit to regularly reassess its operations to keep improving care for the communities it serves. The organization said the restructuring is meant to simplify internal processes, sharpen accountability, and push decision-making closer to the people directly involved in patient care.
Wellstar maintained that its mission remains unchanged and that patients should not expect any difference in the quality or consistency of care they receive. The company added that each affected area was reviewed individually, based on its role in supporting patient care and its alignment with the system’s future direction — which is why the impact varies from one department to another.
